They made their appearance in the Lower Rooms; and here fortune was more favourable to our heroine. The master of the ceremonies introduced to her  a very gentlemanlikeyoung man as a partner ; his name was Tilney. He seemed to be about four or five twenty was rather tall, had a pleasing countenance  , a very intelligent and lively eye,and ,if not quite handsome was very near  it. His address was good, and Catherine felt herself in high luck. There was little leisure for speaking while they danced; but when they were seated at tea,she found him as agreeable as she had already given him credit for being. He talked with fluency and spirit-and there was an archness and pleasantry in his manner which interested, though it was hardly understood by her. After cutting sometime on such matters as naturally arose  from the objects around them. He suddenly addressed her ‘’I have hitherto been very remiss, madam, in the proper attentions of a partner here;I have not yet asked you how long you have been in bed ;whether you were ever here before ;whether you have been at the upper rooms,the theater , and the concert ; and how you like the place altogether.I’ve been very negligent- but are you now at leisure to satisfy me in these particulars? If you are I will begin directly.’’

What is about the passage?

The passage taken from Horthanger Abbey  summarizes a part of Catherine’s mood. She finds a partner with the help of host. Catherine is very pleased with the situation ,but she has some negative thoughts about him.

Does the passage describe everyting in the novel?

No,it doesn’t. It is about only The main heroine’s love.

‘’ I should no more lay it down as a general rule that women write better letters than men ,than that they sing better duets ,or draw better landscapes . In every power ,of which taste is the foundation ,excellence is pretty fairly divided between the sexes. ’’ 

Commentary:

  In the world women and men are born as equal. They share the same rights while doing something else. Though men are strong physically ,they share the charactarestics with women.

              This sentiment had been uttered  so often in vain  that Mrs. Allen had no particular reason to hope  it would be followed with more advantage now ; but we are told to ‘’ despair of nothing we would attain,’’ as’’ unwearied deligence our point would gain’’; and the unwearied deligence with which she had every day wished for the same thing was at length to have it just reward,for hardly had she been seated ten minutes before a lady of about her own age, who was sitting by her, and had been looking at her attentively for several minutes,addressed her with great complaisance in these words: ‘’ I think , madam, I cannot be mistaken;it’s along time since I had the pleasure of seeing you.
